Warhammer series 40,000 chronology.

Lately the universe Warhammer 40,000 began to gain more and more popularity. Once it was just a board game (and now it is), but now we see a huge number of computer games in this universe. Every year more and more large and ambitious games are released in this universe. More and more people are getting to know and play this franchise. So let's take a short tour of how and when it all began and where it led.

I decided to split our excursion into 3 parts. In the first part of the game, which came out in the 90s. In the second part, the games released in the 2000s. And in the third part, games published from 2011 to the present day.

The very first game that was released, based on the board game of the Warhammer 40,000 universe back in 1992, is Space crusade... Its developers were the British company Gremlin Graphics, now closed.

The game was a turn-based strategy game in which you control 5 space marines whose task is to destroy the orcs on the spaceship while completing additional missions.

The graphics of the game were naturally at the level of 92 years old, but this did not interfere with enjoying the gameplay in those years. In the same year, a small expansion, Space Crusade: The Voyage Beyond, was released.

The next game was Space hulk(1993) which is the very first version of the famous Space Hulk'a. And soon after the first part there was a sequel - Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angel(1995), in which, unlike the first part, he acquired full three-dimensional graphics. The games were somewhat reminiscent of Doom - a lobbyirinth first-person shooter, but although this is understandable, at that time everyone and everyone tried to do something similar.

The plot of the game takes place on a huge, abandoned spaceship, where 5 Terminators of the Order of the Blood Angels are trying to find the source of the distress signal and simultaneously cleanse this ship from Genocrades.

Both games are developed by Electronic Arts and Games Workshop. Games Workshop has mainly served as a helper in keeping the game faithful to its Warhammer 40,000 universe, and of course to its original source, the board game Space Hulk.

Next up is our turn, Final Liberation: Warhammer Epic 40,000(1997) is a turn-based military-tactical strategy, in which the main highlight is that we are fighting with whole armies, i.e. we have not a couple of platoons and several armored vehicles at our disposal, but hundreds of units and vehicles.

In the story, the industrial planet Valistad is attacked by Space Orks. We act as the commander-in-chief who must cleanse this planet of the orcs. At the beginning of each mission, we are provided with resources, for which we ourselves create our army and decide the outcome of the company and entire galaxies ...

Epic's developers are Holistic Design, which is mainly engaged in the release of board games. At the moment, they are not engaged in the development of computer games.

According to the plot, the action takes place in the Chimera system, where there is a powerful artifact that the Chaos Word Bearers want to get hold of, but they are rebuffed by the brave order of the Ultramarines.

Under our command there are eight detachments, five paratroopers each. Each squad has its own parameters, abilities and equipment. Each squad can be equipped at your own discretion. But the trick of the game is that the entire composition of the Space Marines from eight squads is for the whole game, i.e. the killed are not reborn and there is no one to replace them.

What else I would like to add is a very atmospheric music that emphasizes the harsh atmosphere and matches its appearance.

And the final game of the 90s in the Warhammer 40,000 universe is Warhammer 40,000: Rites of War(1999). This is the same as its turn-based strategy predecessors. This game has two modes, the first is a company for the Eldar, the second is missions in which you can control any of the three races, which include: Eldar, Empire (Imperial Guard, Space Marines and Tyranids). Here, unlike other games, the good news is that we are allowed to play not only for the brave Space Marines, but also for other races.

The game was developed by DreamForge Intertaiment. Warhammer 40,000: Rites of War was their last game, and the company closed in 2001 due to a disagreement.

Developer: Mindscape Entertainment
Publisher: Mindscape Entertainment
Language: ENG

System requirements:

Processor: Intel486
Memory: 8 MB

Free space on the railway: 80MB
DVD Drive: Drive Emulation

Description:

The plot of the game focuses on a hired general trying to stop the Skaven conspiracy. Playing as the mercenary commander Morgan Bernhard, the player must defeat multiple opponents in battles, using both shooting and melee, as well as magic. The finance of the mercenary army is handled by the cashier Dietrich. The player is often given a choice of missions, thereby allowing different paths to progress through the game, some of which give access to different mercenary units.
The losses incurred in previous battles add up with the increasing level of difficulty of the battles. Because of this, the game is very difficult to complete quickly. Unit losses can be reimbursed in most cities between missions, where appropriate units can be recovered or recruited. Units gain experience and become stronger, thereby increasing the cost of restoration. Also, a soldier from the squad can be wounded, and he will be healed for free after he skips the next battle.
The player could receive magical artifacts and banners that could be handed over to individual heroes and entire squads in order to increase their combat effectiveness.

Description:
In terms of its artistic capabilities, DoW is closest to Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen with their brilliant costume extras, where the visual part of the game was almost more important than the strategic component. I want to live in this world, I want to know its laws, to become a part of it for a while, to be imbued with. The DoW look doesn't get bored over time. Here you are not just some kind of rubber fashion model smiling with sly eyes from bright pictures, but a graphic shell worthy of being called spectacular. The engine, which debuted in Impossible Creatures, has been squeezed out of all its juices: rich colors, shadows, stunning animation of polygonal units plowing through the vastness of a fully three-dimensional landscape. But the main thing is the dynamics, which incessantly feeds the desire to lead the clumsy fraternity into battle again and again in order to once again enjoy the battle taking place on the screen with a riot of psychedelic special effects and sounds enveloping the mind.

Description:
In order not to destroy the fragile balance, Relic took the path of least resistance - not to fix something that already works great. Therefore, there are no herds of new units and heroes in Winter Assault. The authors focused their efforts on the development of "backwardness" and connected an additional side to the intergalactic conflict. In the addon we are greeted by a nice campaign, in which (finally!) Previously deprived races are involved. It is a pity that there are few revolutionary changes in the gameplay and non-standard tasks - the goals are not as often as we would like, they differ from the primitive scheme of "go there, destroy everything alive and, if possible, dead."

Description:
Two new races are capable of driving setting connoisseurs into awe-inspiring trance. The fateful lot fell on the Necrons and Tau; and if about the first ordinary players have heard little, then tau have already flashed on the "blue" screens. Eerie shooter Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior tried to introduce the most desperate and omnivorous to the everyday life of an ordinary soldier of the "fire brigade"; now it's time for a raise. A heavy armor suit, an unshakable faith in one's own exclusivity and: wild cannibal allies. Side by side with highly spiritual tau soldiers, the beggars are fighting, known not only for courage and genetic instability (their body absorbs DNA molecules obtained from food), but also for the fact that they have never peed in their lives. Official science knows much less about the excretory system of the Necrons. The futuristic version of the undead prefers regenerating metal to decrepit flesh and dashingly revives comrades who have fallen for a just cause. Plot? Its role is reduced to geography. The sandy and unattractive world of Kronus became the arena of battles, where the steel dead hoped to take a break from righteous labors. One morning curious archaeologists looked into the crypt - and off we go. Each of the seven antagonists has their own truth. Refined Eldars purposefully harass the awakened Necrons, tau shed blood for the sake of the mysterious "Greater Good", and the Space Marines, having finally quarreled with the Imperial Guard, destroy filth, heresy and at the same time everyone who turned up under the hot hand.

Description:
Warp storm continues to impede interstellar travel, so four planets united by a network of ancient portals have become the arena for fierce battles for power. However, in terms of the number of districts, Soulstorm is only slightly ahead of Dark Crue. The goal is also familiar - to kill the neighbors and watch the boring final cartoon.
There are two newcomers, as before. Two more parties have joined the company: the sisters of battle and the dark eldar. Ladies harness for a long time, but if the player is at the maximum, heretics, to which even the Space Marines and Imperial Guards are ranked in Soulstorm, will be purified by the sacred fire. inquisitorial coloring splashes over the edge. Buildings that look like Catholic monasteries, decorated with organ pipes, a two-legged tank driven by a sinner crucified on the hood (only death grants her forgiveness), an unchanging angel with a sparkling sword, an Abbess who knows how to use the power of the almighty Emperor: the dark eldar inspire no less respect. Futuristic vampires with sadistic inclinations of the day will not live without someone else's vital energy, and therefore are forced to wage an endless war. Soulstorm is proud to be ranked. Here and tortured slaves, and heaps of rotting corpses, and a mask of human skin, and half-naked girls in collars. Otherwise, everything is familiar: rangers shoot, jumpers hit from the rear, rabid heavyweight witches fight in close combat. Warhammer 40,000 Gold Standard

Description:
The sequel to the great real-time strategy game.
The game will be based on the Essence engine familiar from the wonderful Company of Heroes, which has grown to version 2.0, optimized for the needs of DirectX 10 and the exciting world of total multi-core, as well as boasting physics from the old days Havok. The technologies seen in CoH will not go anywhere, but they decided to regret polygons for units a little. However, according to eyewitnesses, the game does not suffer from this at all and looks great. Artificial intelligence will also evoke memories of the previous Relic project, having learned, among other things, to optimally route from point "A" to point "B".
The main slogan of Relic: "Let's say no to thousands of units on the map, turning thoughtful strategic battles into a stupid bloody mess." The developers are going to further personalize the individual soldier, endowing him with a name, a lot of animations and small details. All this unique pack of cutthroats will be able to unite into six squads, marching from mission to mission and receiving new armor, weapons and artifacts for successfully completing tasks.
However, despite all these delights, the main thing in Warhammer 40,000 is the combat unit. And here, too, there are enough interesting innovations. From the functional - units, having peeped the basics of warfare from soldiers from Company of Heroes, will be able to occupy buildings and fire from behind cover. From aesthetic - even more blood and finishing blows, as well as the ability to chop off a piece of enemy armor during a fight. The functional and aesthetic innovations included the full interactivity of the levels - it will be possible to destroy anything, anywhere and anytime. A couple more facts - you will not see any flying (jetpacks' and will not go anywhere, calm down) and floating units in Dawn of War 2 (apparently, they, as before, will be thrust into subsequent add-ons), and Dreadnought's space marines will be able to trample annoying green small fry.

A bit of history

Games Workshop owns the rights to the Warhammer universes. In addition to the classics, there is also a fantasy version, which is why it is the universes in the plural.

As for the developer directly, the company rarely contacts the press and therefore at the moment little is known about how the company licenses the development. And in order to understand how everything is arranged in this niche, you need to understand in detail all the nuances.

The fall of the giant

In the early 1990s, board games were incredibly popular. And already at that time, many people learned about what Warhammer is. Games Workshop has brought some interesting developments onto the market in just a few years. Tactical turn-based shooters quickly caught on and were appreciated quite highly.

Even today, many people remember about games:

  1. Space Crusade.
  2. Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels.

And after that, the owner of the rights to Warhammer changed, and they switched to Strategic Simulations Inc. This company was founded back in 1979 and since its inception has been actively developing and strengthening its position in the market. And after the release of Panzer General in 1994, the status of a successful company was firmly entrenched.

In just three years, SSI has released several more games licensed from Games Workshop. And new developments, which were also step-by-step strategies, fell in love with the general public, they were incredibly successful and were in great demand.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the company was acquired by Ubisoft, and thus SSI ceases to exist, as it is absorbed by the already well-known French company at that time. As for Games Workshop, the company needs to be looking for a publisher to license its own products.

And then THQ becomes the publisher, a company that experienced its rise in the 2000s and bought up numerous studios, including Relic Entertainment. It is this developer that will become the main one throughout the Warhammer 40,000 universe. And it should be said that until now the terms of the deal between the companies are not known to the general public. Indirect indications suggest that the publisher has a license for the entire Warhammer 40,000 universe.

At the end of 2012 THQ was going through serious financial difficulties and the company soon filed for bankruptcy. Of course, the stock fell sharply and the entire property was sold off in the course of the auction. As for the studio Relic Entertainment, it was owned by a friend of the well-known company SEGA, which soon released a new game based on Warhammer Total War.

And Games Workshop was again faced with the question of who would release Warhammer games, but in this case, the company's specialists preferred to choose a completely different approach to work. Instead of selling a license for a huge lot of its own assets, this primarily concerns Warhammer 40,000, the company chose to divide the universes into small chunks and at the same time not cooperate with large companies.

Most often, the studio received the license, which later independently released the game on Steam, as well as in other app stores for smartphones. At the moment, there are 18 such studios, while earlier there were only a few companies, quite well-known and large.

For those who once discovered Warhammer, the world will never be the same again. Or rather, reality will simply be small when there is a whole Multiverse and millions of worlds to choose from. Whoever you are: a fan of Fantasy Battles or a "forty-thousand", the computer entertainment industry has done everything so that you can meet like-minded people not only at the gaming table, but sometimes you could even hack to death alone. And even if the most devoted fans in conversations about video games on Vakhe with a dreamy smile must be mentioned, they say, whether it’s a book or a board game, none of them have spared the next releases for PC and consoles.

Of course, we do not pretend to create a rating, but here are definitely those games that are worth trying for fans of fantasy worlds.

Space hulk

Let's start in order. Almost. Space Hulk is one of the very first PC games based on Warhammer 40,000. Based on the eponymous board game, it was released back in 1993. And it became so similar to the original that it did not cause much enthusiasm from video game fans. According to many critics, adapting the desktop version to the computer could have been better and more interesting.

The plot of the game is built around the clearing of the relict ship "Sin of Damnation" emerging from the warp. Spacecraft are of great interest to the Imperium as a source of forgotten technology and knowledge. However, along with technology, they also pose a threat: ships are infected with genestealers. Further, everything is simple: a squad of the elite Space Marines of the Order of the Dark Angels is trying to clear "Sin of Damnation" in order to defeat and find the source of the distress signal. Tyranid representatives desperately prevent the Dark Angels from succeeding.

So, the rules by which Space Marines fight genestealers have been transferred to the computer game straight from the board game without any changes. Opponents take turns, and each turn the fighters are allocated action points. They are spent on moving, shooting, opening doors - in a word, on everything that is needed during the game. The success of any action here, as we said above, is largely random, as in the desktop version of Space Hulk. That is, it is determined solely by throwing six-sided dice, which the computer throws for us. It is impossible to predict how any skirmish will end. The most advanced weapon only increases the chances of a positive outcome, but does not provide any guarantees.

There are certain problems with the visualization of what is happening. Characters do not die from fatal shots, but after standing up decently and counting down the prescribed few seconds. Personalization is limited to the name of each warrior - you should not count on more or less varied voice acting or display of emotions. And you can't miss the animation, so be prepared to waste a few extra minutes at the start of each mission. At the same time, Space Hulk cannot be called a bad game - it's just that all its good sides came directly from the desktop original. And the computer version could still be better.

LostKonnor: "Disgusting game in the Warhammer universe. Very few possibilities, only 2 types of opponents, very random gameplay. Everything in the game depends on random numbers, and the coolest Space Marine can die from the first hit of a pathetic xenos, although before that he killed dozens of them. Brad."

VLAD-snorkc: "In principle - each mission is a puzzle and makes one think that one can not often find it in modern games. But personally I did not like that the game is played only on behalf of the Blood Angels. Not only they climb hulks! that you can't play as genestealers in the single. Agree, it would be nice to chase the trembling with fear of the Greatest Heroes of Humanity ... ".

By the way, in 2013, Space Hulk decided to revive and, to the delight of the fans, released the remake of the same name. However, the joy lasted in most cases exactly until the moment of installation. The game, as they say, did not ignite. And if its predecessor 20 years ago was still a hit, then Space Hulk-2013 expected the fate to be appreciated only by ardent fans of turn-based strategies. However, it is worth noting that a year later, the development company did "work on mistakes" in the form of Space Hulk Ascension, which did not become a breakthrough, but definitely surpassed the 2013 attempt.

Paying tribute to the pioneering games, it's worth remembering the real-time strategy game Dawn of War by Warhammer 40,000. "Dawn of War" - perhaps the first thing that came out decently on Vakha. The game was released in 2004, after which fans were delighted with additions several times.

During a solo campaign, the player can rule primarily the army of the Order of the Blood Ravens of the Space Marines. However, in the "skirmish" mode, armies of other races are also available.

After the release of Dawn of War, critics were scattered with compliments. The game of the mid-2000s was distinguished by not bad graphics and animation, interesting multiplayer and a number of differences from other popular RTS like Warcraft. So, for example, the creators of DoW paid a lot of attention to the tactical component. As a rule, 4-8 characters are sent into battle, and not an entire battalion. The total number of troops and equipment in the game is also limited, which does not allow players to practice the policy of "waiting" and the accumulation of giant hordes.

Also, great emphasis in "Breaking Dawn" is placed on the individual abilities of each unit, by virtue of which the battle requires serious control over each unit, and the tactics of "stupidly go into battle" usually leads to defeat.

However, gamers also noted the disadvantages of a video game. For example, its generally unoriginal gameplay and weak solo company. However, this fly in the ointment almost did not spoil the overall picture. Dawn of War was an unequivocally successful release and fans are still playing with it today.

A few words about the most successful additions. We would refer to them Dark crusade and Soulstorm... The first add-on was released in 2006 and made it possible to play for any of the seven (!!!) available races: Space Marines, Guardsmen, Eldar, Necros, Tau Empire, Orcs and Chaos. Moreover, victory here can be achieved only by defeating all rivals and conquering all 22 provinces of Kronus. The developers came up with interesting conditions for capturing capitals, smartly tightened up the graphics and significantly updated the gameplay. The supplement was appreciated by both gamers and the press.

Soulstorm, released in 2008, turned out to be less interesting, but the number of races represented in the game has grown to 9. Well, a couple of new planets were given to us by game developers. In addition, gamers got access to new aircraft and a bonus campaign. All of this made Soulstorm a fairly large-scale playable canvas. Although the addon still did not become a real hit due to minor flaws and lack of fresh ideas.

Forest Swamp: "One of the best strategies in my library. The mechanics of the squads are very convenient, because you do not have to return to the base to replenish the missing units. Everything is done on the go, without interrupting the fighting. I think the only drawback is the ease of passing. Once accustomed to the mechanics of the game, you can go through campaigns. no loss of units / squads ... But overall the game is very cool. "

It is worth noting that Warhammer 40,000, in principle, turned out to be a much more grossing and well-known universe among the masses. There are hundreds of games on it, but you can count the good ones on your fingers. And the third finger will definitely have to bend for the sequel to Dawn of War.

The second part of the strategy that gamers love has a slightly different mechanics from the original. First, in DoW II, you don't build or mine anything - you simply have no time for that. After all, the player constantly has a problem of choice: for example, having received several distress signals at once, he can respond only to one of them. Leaving tasks for later will not work.

Instead of large armies in the campaign, the player is given no more than four units. The funny thing is that each of them has unique features, its own gadgets and artifacts, as well as different voice acting. And the game card allows you to destroy and break everything to hell. Well, almost everything.

Critics again greeted the 40K release with warm reviews. Dawn of War II received a well-deserved "like" for the changed gameplay and beautiful graphics. And a repeated reproach for the boring and repetitive single-player mode. Russian reviewers unanimously called the sequel "almost perfect", although they did not miss the opportunity to scold the developers for the jambs already noticed by their Western colleagues. In the next couple of years, Dawn of War II, just like its predecessor, received a couple of additions. The most successful of them came out Retribution addon (2011): it has existed quite cheerfully to this day. After the release of this add-on, all multiplayer fans ran into it. The release was accompanied by not sickly work on the plot (gamers were told what happened within 10 years after the battle in Chaos Rising), the expansion of the available races and an interesting line of characters. In addition, game makers became friends with Steam: and this was an important strategic step.

However, it was not without its drawbacks. The locations were too similar to each other, and the gameplay in the addon remained practically unchanged. But these are just fly in the ointment in a barrel of cosmic honey.

Torton: "The game is without a doubt epic. Its advantages are graphics, as well as multiplayer. The music is catchy, the soundtrack for the game is very pleasing. The plot, of course, is the same for each race, the missions are similar. But all this drawback covers the Last Frontier mode, where you can choose one of 7 heroes and fight in two arenas with two other players against hordes of different enemies.

And again before us is the world of space, lasers and Space Marines. Spaсe Marine is a third-person action game. The player receives a squad of 3 representatives of the Ultramarine Order. Veteran Sergeant Sidonius and Brother Leander accompany the company on most missions, although sometimes it will be necessary to act alone. The basic set of the "young soldier" includes a combat knife and a bolt pistol, but over time the player will be able to purchase other types of weapons.

You can hack in Spaсe Marine both in single player mode and over the Internet. The second option is clearly more popular, since here the single player campaign is clearly inferior to the battle with other representatives of the genre. However, it is worth noting, unlike both parts of Dawn of War, "Space Marines" was received coolly by critics. Although the fans like it. And this is the main reason why you are reading about this game here.

Alexander: "Reviews are reviews, and personally I played both single and multiplayer with great pleasure, and I am very sad that the second part of this game did not work. Because the ending of the first clearly hinted that there would be fierce trash and waste ".

Warhammer 40,000: Regicide is a strategy game based on the "forty thousand" game in which players have to play a kind of chess, where instead of black and white pieces you will find separate races. However, the toy has two modes - Classic and Regicide. The first resembles a classic chess game, only in the designated fantastic universe. And the second allows you to use psionics, chainswords, bolters and grenades to the fullest on the field. Players are waiting for a single story campaign of fifty missions and a multiplayer mode in which you can play as Space Marines or Orcs. Each race has its own characteristics and abilities.

In Regicide, it's not enough just to kill brutally. The player is recommended to use tactical thinking, the ability to analyze and, of course, play chess. After all, Warhammer 40,000: Regicide is, first of all, chess, albeit brutal, with blood and the Inquisition. By the way, in online multiplayer, not only PC users will be able to fight with each other, but also owners of tablets based on iOs and Android.

PC Gamer: "Warhammer 40,000: Regicide is exciting: the developers actually gave us two games in one and provided a unique opportunity to play chess according to the cruel rules of this harsh universe."

Stabilo: "Regicide is a fascinating mixture of strategy and chess, where you can just be stunned, raking both from the classic chess techniques, and from the fact that the BOAT FIRES, and you can't hit it at close range. 10/10, it is okay" ...

Of course, in our time, when gadgets have partly replaced the good old PC, there could be no separate Wache games for mobile platforms. One of the most notable was the 2014 Carnage. Many fans snorted offended when they learned that the Warhammer game would not be a classic RTS, but a side-scrolling action game with a Space Marine in the lead role. But all the dissatisfaction quickly disappeared when the project appeared first on iOS, and then on Android.

Despite the fact that "Warhammer 40,000: Carnage" is presented in the form of an extremely popular gaming concept, the mobile "forty thousand" has not lost the atmosphere of the original and even managed to present something new and interesting to the genre. For example, if in most "runners" on Android players have long been accustomed to easily run through entire levels, then "Warhammer 40,000: Carnage" will surprise them. The gameplay of the game turned out to be much slower than its brothers in the genre - and all thanks to the high complexity. After the first ten (rather easy) levels, you will probably be knocked out of a rut by a fight with a large boss. All subsequent levels you will have to slowly but surely pump your hero. We can say that this is where the main plot begins.

The project has a very uniform gameplay that requires careful and deliberate handling of yourself. You never know what kind of stray bullet will fly out from around the corner, and cut off the last chance for a successful completion of the level. Dynamic, interesting and quite good for a mobile platform.

Artem Savin: "The game is not so simple, and you will go through it for a long time, since there are enough levels here. As you equip your character, these abilities will change. If you equip a jetpack, then you will be able to double jump using the jetpack itself. . Or some kind of shield, which instead of melee attack will give you protection. In general, the game is excellent, in my opinion - no flaws, so download, you will not regret it. "

Could anything be a new discovery in the Warhammer 40,000 universe? Time will show. So far, the next upcoming release is of the greatest interest among fans.

A real-time strategy game based on the board game of the same name is under development. The release happened quite recently, namely on April 21, 2016. Players in Battlefleet Gothic: Armada will get four armies of spaceships to choose from: the troops of the Imperium, Chaos, Orcs and Eldar. The game mix is built around the attempts of the imperial navy to repel the invasion of Chaos in the Gothic sector of the galaxy. You can include a wide variety of ships in your fleet, from frigates to huge battleships. The system of protection and weapons of each can be customized independently, which will increase (or decrease) the efficiency and abilities of ships in battle. Well, the ships that have won the battles, respectively, receive an increase and new abilities.

By the way, the developers decided to cut the Space Marine faction as additional content - as separate from the Imperium. What caused the violent indignation of the fans. I had to compromise and declare that the lotion would be free. But, however, only for those who managed to pre-order Batlefleet Gothik: Armada or are going to purchase the game within 2 months after release.

Our journey through the computer world of Warhammer 40,000 has come to an end. Light nostalgia mixed with loud expectations, and the hand itself reached for the mouse ... However, we have no doubt that you may have your own favorites among video games in the "forty-thousand" model. After all, as is often the case, there were few unambiguously successful or undeniably failed releases here. And the developers are not going to stop there.

Finally - a couple more nostalgic games. We cannot say that they are unequivocally “the best of the best”, but among members of our editorial staff they cause an aching nostalgic feeling in their hearts. If you want to also try it - then play these atmospheric and hardcore toys.

This game is worth tackling if the aesthetics of classic turn-based strategies from the 90s are close and understandable to you. When in front of you is a conditional card with "counters-units", lined with cells of possible moves. Now they are no longer made. You ask: where is this grumbling, and what were these RTS-ki cool? Firstly, they were the ones who bridged the bridge from desktop to PC gaming, while retaining all of their aesthetics and atmosphere. Secondly, they were insanely difficult. Just some kind of hardcore: enemies are surrounding, action points are not enough, you are constantly losing ... It took whole weeks to complete!

And Rites of War is also a very striking product in terms of graphics. Our author Dr. Anatom admitted that he bought it in the 90s precisely because of the bright image (and he did not even hear about the universe of forty thousand people then).

A few words about the gameplay. Here is a map divided into hexes. One "cell" can be occupied either by a whole detachment, or by one important character. In each of these cases, the balance of points and vitality will change. The speed of movement on the map directly depends on the landscape of the zone and the properties of the units. And there are also buildings and objects that can be used (heal, capture, find artifacts). So all the battles and actions turn out to be very realistic: you really lead your soldiers through the mountains and valleys J. Note that the developers have come up with an advanced system of tasks: somewhere you need to kill all enemies, somewhere you need to capture key hexes or get to the test zones.

The only pity is that in the storyline company you can only play for Eldar. But in single player mode, you will also be able to steer the Imperial Guard and Tyranids.

Our review is closed by probably the most atmospheric game in the series. Just imagine: then, in 1998, its developers specially recorded soundtracks with gloomy military anthems in Latin! They had to be written, worked out, recorded ... Even now, 20 years later, few developers are so worried about the material. And in 1998, from such a soundtrack, goosebumps ran, honestly.

However, the atmosphere in the "Gates of Chaos" was created not only by music. It was a classic turn-based chopping game in the spirit of X-Com. If a gamer once liked to bring down a friendly detachment of alien invaders, then he will definitely like Chaos Gate. In some ways igruha also resembled the unforgettable Jagged Alliance.

Note that Chaos Gate turned out to be very dynamic, which is rarely found in turn-based strategies. Probably, the gameplay did it after all. As in X-Com, you clear difficult locations filled with vegetation, buildings and other man-made obstacles from enemies. Points for squats, running, shooting, throwing grenades and other actions are constantly lacking. In addition, in parallel with this, you have to solve difficult tactical tasks and save the lives of all 6 Space Marines! I really don't want to give them away: after all, from level to level you pump each of the heroes in different ways, you even start to empathize with these drawn figures.

In short, we have before us an exemplary tactical strategy, which can be played not only by fans of nostalgia and Warhammer 40,000, but also by all connoisseurs of cool turn-based strategies.

Download a series of games Warhammer 40,000 on a PC from a torrent for free at high speed from the site - an exciting world that has conquered millions of players.

Warhammer 40,000 is a tactical shooter, real-time strategy and just a great game that will only let you relax in the interval between missions. But even here you will have to take care of your squad - improve their weapons, discover new skills, donate powerful combat artifacts and again into battle.

Almost continuous shooting with short pauses in order to move forward, to take new positions to meet the next wave of opponents with heavy fire. At the same time, dynamic shooting is wrapped in high-quality graphics and a balanced combat system. It is still difficult to find such a combination among modern projects.
