  • The capsules contained between 531 mcg and 964 mcg of iodine - levels considered very high (unless you are a native of Japan, for example) and well above the FDA's “safe” limits for kelp iodine in supplements.
  • The FDA regulation states that "brown algae can be safely added" to dietary supplements as a source of iodine, provided that the daily serving does not contain more than 225 mcg of iodine.

For certain populations, the FDA specifies different values:

  • For babies: 45 mcg,
  • For children under 4 years old: 105 mcg,
  • For adults and children aged 4 and over: 225 mcg,
  • For pregnant or lactating women: 300 mcg.

Excessive intake of iodine (usually more than 1000 mcg daily) can cause thyroid diseases (AIT, hypothyroidism, thyrotoxicosis, cancer, iodism phenomena). In addition, one additive was contaminated with arsenic. The inorganic form of arsenic is a carcinogen (causing cancer bladder, lung and skin cancer and possibly liver, kidney and prostate cancer), and can also have a detrimental effect on organs and the circulatory system.

Which is better to take: iodine or Kelp

5 out of 8 kelp supplements selected and tested by ConsumerLab.com met its quality standards. The lab did not indicate which particular plant species or algae plant was safest.

Therefore, taking a proven product containing potassium iodide rather than brown seaweed is a safer choice because you are more likely to consume the exact amount of iodine indicated on the package, and there is no chance of contamination with arsenic or other heavy metals.

The original potassium iodide preparation has passed all possible checks and tests, therefore, as this drug no doubt. Iodine supplements are not clinically tested for efficacy and safety. However, my opinion on taking kelp supplements is not entirely categorical. It is truly a super food that contains a lot of important vitamins and minerals.

Do you want to know which kelp supplements are approved by the independent laboratory ConsumerLab (USA) and which have not passed quality control? The following dietary supplements of iodine were tested (unfortunately, the list is not as long as we would like, and many popular dietary supplements with ayherb were not considered).

The check failed:

  • Nature's Answer Kelp Thallus - contained 683.8 mcg of iodine instead of the declared 330 mcg per capsule (207.2% of the indicated amount),

  • Traditional Foods Market Kelp Powder - Contains 531 mcg of iodine instead of 300 mcg in the recommended daily serving (177% of the indicated amount).

  • Progressive Laboratories Kelp - Contains 964.2 mcg of iodine instead of the listed 500 mcg per capsule (192.8% of indicated amount). In addition, it was contaminated with arsenic, with just over 5 mcg of inorganic arsenic (the most toxic form) detected per capsule!

In addition, even the labeled amounts of iodine in these three supplements significantly exceed the FDA's "safe" limits for iodine from kelp in supplements (no more than 225 mcg).

Natural Factors Liquid Kelp has been tested but contains too much iodine per serving: 800 mcg, well above the FDA's "safe" limit. This supplement also contained less arsenic than all other kelp supplements tested.

Kelp brown algae: reviews and instructions for use

The lab noted the Swanson Kelp and Nature's Life Icelandic Kelp supplements, which had a low and about the same cost per tablet and provided 225 mcg of iodine per serving, which is, according to the FDA, a "safe" dose for adults and children over 4 years of age. However, Swanson was preferred as it "contained kelp extract to reduce the risk of potential arsenic contamination."

  • People taking blood thinners such as aspirin, clopidogrel, heparin, ticlopidine, warfarin, etc. should consume kelp with caution because kelp contains compounds called fucoidans that have antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects (Zhao, Thromb Res 2012, Fitton, Mar Drugs 2015).
  • Kelp supplements should be avoided if you are allergic to shellfish as the algae can absorb the waste products of other marine life.
  • A small number of women who took 3 550 mg kelpa tablets daily for six weeks experienced an autoimmune reaction resulting in abnormal bleeding, bruising, and low platelet counts; symptoms resolved after treatment and discontinuation (Pye, Lancet 1992).
  • The daily intake of organic iodine from kelp supplements is slightly higher than for potassium iodide (225 mcg versus 150 mcg), since its absorption in the intestine is slightly lower.

Most of the heavy metals were found in Dobroflot cabbage, and polychlorinated biphenyls in the Bering sample, but their amount was far from the maximum permissible values.

Roskontrol also checked whether there is enough seaweed itself in the jars (the norm is more than 50%). Only “Marine Rainbow” did not reach the coveted figure (only 48%). Less than 60% of cabbage in the products of the brands "5 Seas", "Kapitan Vkusov", "Bering". The most generous are Dobroflot (89% of cabbage) and Morskoy Seal (76%).
