Description of the pharmacological action

Omega-3 fatty acids are a class of essential PUFAs. They influence mental development and visual functions of the child, because are a plastic material for brain tissue, retina and nervous tissue. PUFAs form the basis of cell membranes, ensuring their permeability, regulate the flow and metabolism of cells.

A lack of these acids can lead to a decrease in the level of intelligence, immunity and adaptive capabilities of the child.

Vitamin C helps to increase the body's resistance to stress, helps to successfully cope with its consequences, is of great importance in the synthesis of hormones responsible for the body's resistance and adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant with immunostimulating properties.

Vitamin E is an essential component of the body's antioxidant defense system; it prevents free radicals from damaging the cells of the brain tissue and the organ of vision.

Acting in a complex, Omega-3 PUFAs, vitamins C and E normalize metabolism, enhance immunity, correct assimilation of knowledge, develop intelligence and help resist stress.

MULTI-PANELS It should be noted that in the last year the Russian cinema show business (I don’t want to use the word “culture”) has been “enriched” with a number of expensive animation projects. A horde of Alyosha Dobrynichy fell from the movie screens onto small and large spectators

Fatty polyunsaturated acids are needed for the normal development of the child and are irreplaceable, that is, they are not synthesized by the body, but come from the outside. Contained in fatty fish, which are not always suitable for baby food. For children, the best option for getting Omega-3 is to take any supplements, medications or multivitamin complexes with this element in the composition.

In his book Blue Zones, the famous US traveler Dan Buettner described 5 geographic regions where the average life expectancy of people is higher than in the rest of the world. Including 3 islands - Greek Ikaria, Italian Sardinia and Japanese Okinawa.

One of the reasons for the phenomenon, in his opinion, lay in the fact that a large amount of omega-3s came into the body of people with daily food.

Fish, nuts, vegetable oils and seafood are the main components of the diet of the inhabitants of the "blue zones". In addition to longevity, the difference between the population of blue zones is a negligible percentage of deaths from heart disease and oncological diseases.

Omega-3s are polyunsaturated fatty acids: Alpha-linolenic (ALA, Alpha-Linolenic Acid), docosahexaenoic (DHA, Docosahexaenoic Acid) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA, Eicosapentaenoic Acid).

EPA and DHA are of animal origin, with the highest concentration in fish oil. ALA is synthesized by plants, their main source for humans is vegetable oils, chia seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts. From the alpha-linolenic acid received with food, a part in the amount of about 10% is absorbed by the human body.

When choosing which omega-3 preparation for children is best, you need to pay attention to the source of origin of PUFA - animal sources are preferable.

Omega-3 is not produced human bodybut is necessary to maintain its functionality at all stages of life.

Others beneficial features omega-3s are relevant for all age groups:

  • it has been scientifically proven that daily consumption of PUFA significantly slows down the development of osteoporosis, blocks inflammation in the joints and overall bone loss;
  • increase the production of the hormone of happiness (serotonin) and reduce the amount of cortisol (stress hormone), thus helping to cope with depression and neurosis;
  • improve vision, reduce the risk of cataracts;
  • normalize blood pressure, accelerate wound healing, are used in the treatment and prevention of cancer, in people whose diet is rich in omega-3, thrombophlebitis and other diseases occur less often against the background of blood clots.

From what age can you take?

The question of which omega-3 drug is best for children should be addressed with a pediatrician. For a child under 2 years old, the consumption of fish oil or a supplement replacing it may cause interruptions in work digestive system.

Starting from the 2nd month of life, the use of funds with this substance for medical reasons is shown:

  • disorders in the development of dental and bone tissues;
  • rickets;
  • visual defects;
  • frequent colds;
  • problems in the work of the heart, with blood vessels;
  • prevention of atherosclerosis.

The supplement is prescribed at an early age only by a doctor, who determines the dosage and duration of admission. Upon reaching 2-3 years, it is recommended to supplement the diet with omega-3 as part of a multi-vitamin complex or as a separate supplement daily for 30 days several times a year, with a break of 3-4 months between courses of admission.

Which is better omega 3 or fish oil?

Fish does not produce EPA and DHA, but synthesizes it from dietary alpha-linolenic acid. For the production of drinking medical fish oil, the liver of northern deep-sea fish varieties is mainly used, which consists of almost a third of fats.

Component Content in 5 g (1 teaspoon) Recommended daily intake (for children from 1 to 10 years old)
Polyunsaturated fatty acids 0.4 g 0.7-1 g
Vitamin A 400 IU 1700-2300 IU
Vitamin D 188 IU 100-160 IU

Fish oil contains only 8% PUFA, and the rest is saturated fatty acids: about 70% oleic and about 20-22% palmitic. The main field of application of these acids is in the chemical industry, and although their use in food is quite safe, they practically have no other biological value, except for calorie content.

The quality of fish oil depends on its habitat, nutritional quality and general environmental conditions. In the liver, not only PUFAs are deposited, other substances from iodine to lead accumulate there, but manufacturers do not provide information on the origin of the fish and the detailed composition.

On the packaging or in the instructions for the use of pharmaceutical fish oil, the following composition is standardly indicated: active substance: 1 ml of the preparation contains fish oil produced from the liver of cod fish - 1 ml.

And, although the same fish oil is the basis of dietary supplements and vitamin complexes for children with omega-3s, there is a difference between them. It consists in the approach to control over its quality, origin and purification.

For example, the fish oil used to make Wellnes Kids with omega-3s is eco-certified by Friends of the Sea (FOS), a highly ranked fish product quality control organization. In order for the consumer to check the validity of the certificate, its number is indicated on the company's official website.

Specialized supplements contain less "excess" fats, have better taste than pharmaceutical fish oil, and children take them with pleasure. An unpleasant aftertaste, pungent odor and specific consistency are the main properties of fish oil, because of which some kids flatly refuse to use it.

The only advantage of fish oil over dietary supplements is a significantly lower cost.

Fish oil or omega-3 for children, which drug should be better decided based on the following selection criteria:

  1. Individual intolerance and tendency to allergies: as part of dietary supplements more content PUFAs have fewer impurities and "empty" fats than regular fish oil, but they also contain excipients - dyes, sugars, gelatin and flavorings.
  2. Child's age: it is difficult for babies to explain the need to take an unpleasant medication, chewable tablets with a fruity aroma or a sweetened syrup, they are likely to enjoy more than a fishy-smelling liquid with a long, specific aftertaste.
  3. Cost: fish oil painlessly for the family budget will supplement the diet of children from 12 years old, if they do not have digestive problems or other contraindications.

Daily allowance for children of different ages

PUFAs are necessary for the harmonious development and functioning of the body, a low level of omega-3 in a child's diet provokes attention disorder, susceptibility to infections and inflammatory processes... On the other hand, a single or regular overdose can cause serious disruptions in the child's digestive tract - nausea, diarrhea, and even vomiting.

It is necessary to adhere to the normal intake of omega-3 supplements and vitamin complexes by children. According to the general recommendations of the American Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2000 per day, the intake of omega-3 PUFAs for adults is from 2000 to 3000 mg per day.

More detailed studies have been conducted and published by one of the top medical institutions USA Mayo Clinic. In accordance with the results obtained, the average consumption rates of PUFA were developed in order to prevent its deficiency in children.

Table. The body's daily need for omega 3 acids, depending on the age and gender of the child:

Age up to 1 year from one to 3 years from 4 to 8 years old from 9 to 13 years old from 14 to 18 years old
Girls 500 mg 700 mg 900 mg 1000 mg 1100 mg
Boys 500 mg 700 mg 900 mg 1200 mg 1600 mg

These norms should be adjusted taking into account the body weight of the child in the presence of deviations from the norm by more than 10% up or down.

Indications

Parents most often learn that a child has a significant PUFA deficiency during routine medical examination, or in the process of treating chronic diseases. The signs of deficiency with a small deficit are less pronounced and sometimes go unnoticed. It has been scientifically proven that disorders in the development of children in 80% of all cases are caused by a lack of polyunsaturated fatty acids in their diet.

Omega-3 for children have big role, it is better to start any drugs with PUFA immediately after the onset of symptoms such as:

What foods contain Omega-3

In order to prevent a deficiency of polyunsaturated fatty acids, it is not necessary to take fish oil or special supplements, usually enriching the diet with foods with a large amount of PUFAs becomes a sufficient measure.

How much omega-3 is in food (per 100 g):

Fatty polyunsaturated acids are not synthesized by the human body, the source of their supply is the food consumed.

It is preferable to obtain omega-3 in the form of EPA and DHA, since they are completely absorbed by the body. ALA in the process of metabolism breaks down into the same EPA and DHA, but the final amount of assimilated polyunsaturated acids is only 10% of the incoming volume.

Therefore, from 100 g of walnuts, the body will receive only 1.03 g of omega-3, and from the same amount of tuna - 3 times more, 3.2 g, although the primary nutrient content in fish is 3 times less than in nuts.

Top 7 vitamin complexes in capsules for children

Traditionally, doctors have recommended regular fish oil to compensate for the deficiency of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

But science does not stand still, and today the pharmaceutical industry is ready to offer the consumer a huge selection of products from syrups to chewable tablets containing no less, and sometimes even more PUFA than fish oil, with better taste and much less pronounced side effects.

Which drug with Omega-3 is better to choose for children, it turns out after reading the manufacturer's data on the composition and application features.

How to use. Instructions for use

You should take funds to replenish the PUFA deficiency with meals. Violation of this rule is fraught with problems from the gastrointestinal tract from unpleasant "fishy" belching to diarrhea. Standard dosage per day: syrup from 1 tsp, capsules or gummies, 1-2 pcs. depending on age. The course is from 14 to 30 days, you can repeat it after at least 3 months, not earlier.

Contraindications

Which drug with omega-3 acids will be better tolerated by a child can only be determined in practice. Taste preferences play an important role: some children like chewable tablets with a fruit flavor, others like syrup or gelatinous fish.

Regardless of the choice of form, we must not forget that there are a number of contraindications:

  • Aggravation:
  1. chronic cholecystitis;
  2. chronic pancreatitis;
  3. diseases of the digestive system.

Possible side effects

In the absence of contraindications to the use of PUFA, side effects are extremely rare and are most often associated either with an overdose or with temporary malfunctions in the digestive system:

  • diarrhea;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • violation of gas exchange - belching and flatulence.

In these cases, symptomatic treatment is indicated, it is recommended to take such means as:

  • espumisan;
  • absorbent carbon;
  • enteros gel;
  • multisorb or other sorbing preparations,
  • a slice of lemon or orange helps with nausea.

It is extremely rare that there may be:

  • Can cause allergic reactions in patients with increased sensitivity.
  • With long-term consumption of fish oil in large quantities, the exhaled air can smell like fish.
  • Due to the anticoagulant properties, at high doses of use, nosebleeds or increased wound or hemorrhagic bleeding are possible.

If the side effects persist after taking additional measures to eliminate them, you will have to call a doctor. The likely reason is that the child has previously not found contraindications to taking the drug.

Drug compatibility

Omega-3 preparations for children are transferred in combination with others medicines generally better than fish oil, which should not be taken simultaneously with any vitamin complexes, as there is a risk of hypervitaminosis A, D or E.

All drugs for lowering blood lipids.

All drugs used in cardiology are.

Omega-3 (on the example of Omakor) - a review of a cardiologist:

The main advantage of good Omega-3 preparations is their natural origin. This is not a chemical, but useful substances extracted from fish.

The main medicinal properties - influence on the fatty composition of blood and antiarrhythmic action.

Omega-3s are good at lowering triglyceride levels, slightly lowering total cholesterol and bad low-density cholesterol, sort of like raising a little protective high-density cholesterol, which leads to a decrease in the risk of cardiovascular complications (heart attacks, strokes).

In case of rhythm disturbances, Omakor can reduce the manifestations of the disease (for example, reduce the number of extrasystoles). In the US, it is recommended even for patients after a heart attack to prevent rhythm disturbances.

In any case, Omakor has practically no side effects, you can take it without fear, and in the standard case, doses of up to 2 grams per day are recommended.

The only clarification: not all Omega-3 preparations are of high quality. To test your drug, put the capsule in the freezer. A high-quality drug practically does not become cloudy, and a bad one becomes opaque.

So match the price and quality for yourself, your beloved.

Omakor - official instructions for use. Prescription drug, information is intended only for healthcare professionals!

Composition

1 capsule weighing 1 g contains: eicosapentaenoic acid ester (EPA) - 460mg + docosahexaenoic acid ester (DHA) - 380mg.

Clinical and pharmacological group

Lipid-lowering drug.

pharmachologic effect

Lipid-lowering drug. Contains polyunsaturated essential fatty acids of the omega-3-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) class - belong to essential (essential) fatty acids (NEFA).

Omacor reduces triglycerides as a result of a decrease in the concentration of VLDL, in addition, it actively affects hemostasis, reducing the synthesis of thromboxane A2 and slightly increasing the blood coagulation time.

Delays the synthesis of triglycerides in the liver (by inhibiting the esterification of EPA and DHA).

The decrease in triglyceride levels is facilitated by an increase in peroxisome beta-oxidation of fatty acids (a decrease in the amount of free fatty acids available for the synthesis of triglycerides).

The increase in HDL is very small and not permanent. It is significantly less than after taking fibrates.

The results of observations (over 3.5 years) of patients taking Omacor at a dose of 1 g per day showed a significant reduction in the combined indicator, including mortality from all causes, as well as non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke.

Pharmacokinetics

During and after absorption of omega-3 fatty acids, there are 3 main metabolic pathways:

  • fatty acids are first delivered to the liver, where they are incorporated different categories lipoproteins and are directed to peripheral lipid stores;
  • phospholipids of cell membranes are replaced by phospholipids of lipoproteins, after which fatty acids can act as precursors of various eicosanoids;
  • most fatty acids are oxidized to meet energy needs.

The concentration of omega-3 fatty acids - EPA and DHA - in plasma phospholipids corresponds to the concentration of these fatty acids included in the composition of cell membranes.

Indications for the use of the drug OMACOR

Secondary prevention of myocardial infarction (as part of combination therapy with statins, antiplatelet agents, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors).

Hypertriglyceridemia: endogenous hypertriglyceridemia - as an adjunct to the diet when its effectiveness is insufficient:

  • type IV (as monotherapy);
  • type IIb / III (in combination with statins - in the case when the concentration of triglycerides remains high).

Dosage regimen

The drug is taken orally during meals.

For secondary prevention myocardial infarction is recommended to take 1 capsule per day.

In the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia, the initial dose of Omacor is 2 capsules per day. In the absence therapeutic effect the dose may be increased to 4 capsules per day.

The duration of treatment is set individually.

Side effect

Frequency definition side effects: often (1-10%); infrequently (0.1-1%); rarely (0.01-0.1%); very rarely (less than 0.01%), including isolated cases.

From the digestive system: often - dyspepsia, nausea; infrequently - abdominal pain, gastrointestinal disorders, gastritis, pain in the upper abdomen, gastroenteritis; rarely - liver dysfunction; very rarely - bleeding from the lower gastrointestinal tract; in isolated cases - increased activity of liver enzymes.

From the side of the central nervous system: infrequently - dizziness, dysgeusia (taste perversion); rarely headache.

Allergic reactions: infrequently - hypersensitivity reactions.

From the side of metabolism: rarely - hyperglycemia; in isolated cases - an increase in the need for insulin (the need to increase the standard dose).

From the side of cardio-vascular system: very rare - decrease in blood pressure.

From the respiratory system: very rarely - dry nose.

Dermatological reactions: rarely - acne, itchy rash; very rarely - urticaria; in isolated cases - rosacea, rash, hyperemia / erythema, urticaria in the area chest, neck, and shoulders.

In the course of research: very rarely - an increase in the number of leukocytes in the peripheral blood, an increase in the level of LDH; in isolated cases - an increase in the level of CPK, myalgia, an increase in ACT, ALT, an increase in body weight. In patients with hypertriglyceridemia, a moderate increase in transaminases (ACT, ALT) has been reported.

Contraindications to the use of the drug OMACOR

  • exogenous hypertriglyceridemia (hyperchylomicronemia) (type I according to Fredrickson's classification);
  • pregnancy;
  • lactation period (breastfeeding);
  • hypersensitivity to drug components.

The drug should be prescribed with caution in case of severe liver dysfunction, simultaneously with fibrates, simultaneously with oral anticoagulants, in severe injuries, surgical operations (due to the risk of increased bleeding time), elderly patients (over 70 years old), as well as children and adolescents under the age of 18 years (efficacy and safety have not been established).

The use of the drug OMAKOR during pregnancy and breastfeeding

The drug is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding).

Application for violations of liver function

The drug should be prescribed with caution in case of severe liver dysfunction. In patients with impaired liver function (especially when taking the drug at a dose of 4 capsules per day), regular monitoring of liver function is necessary (determination of ACT and ALT activity).

Application for impaired renal function

special instructions

Due to a moderate increase in bleeding time (when taking Omakor in a high dose - 4 capsules), constant medical supervision of patients on anticoagulant therapy is required, and, if necessary, an appropriate correction of the anticoagulant dose. Carrying out this therapy does not exclude the need for the usual monitoring provided for the treatment of such patients.

An increase in bleeding time should be taken into account in patients with an increased risk of hemorrhage (eg, as a result of severe trauma, surgery).

The available experience in the study of secondary endogenous hypertriglyceridemia (especially in uncontrollable diabetes mellitus) is very limited.

There is no clinical experience regarding the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia in combination with fibrates, therefore, the simultaneous administration of Omacor with fibrates is not recommended.

When taking Omakor, a moderate increase in the activity of hepatic transaminases is possible.

In patients with impaired liver function (especially when taking a high dose of 4 capsules), regular monitoring of liver function is necessary (determination of ACT and ALT activity).

No dose adjustment is required for patients with impaired renal function.

There is no information on the use of the drug Omakor in children, elderly patients over 70 years old or in patients with impaired liver function.

Use in pediatrics

The efficacy and safety of using Omakor in children and adolescents under the age of 18 have not been established.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and use mechanisms

Omakor does not affect the ability to perform work that requires a high concentration of attention and speed of psychomotor reactions.

Overdose

Symptoms: There may be side effects or an increase in their severity.

Treatment: symptomatic therapy is performed.

Drug interactions

With the simultaneous use of Omakor with oral anticoagulants, there is a risk of increased bleeding time.

The appointment of Omakor together with warfarin does not lead to any hemorrhagic complications. However, with the combined administration of Omakor and warfarin or the termination of the course of treatment with Omakor, prothrombin time control is necessary.
